Obituary for Mrs. Ellen Rusconi - Black

Ellen Rusconi-Black, beloved wife of William J. Black, died after a brief illness on Sunday, April 26, 2015. Ellen was also a beloved sister, cousin, aunt and friend, and the heart of Dragonfly Farm.
Ellen was a life-long resident of North Guilford, a community of people she adored. She was born June 8, 1956 to Charles and Joyce Rusconi. She graduated from Guilford High School in 1974 and from Johnson State College in Vermont in 1978. Ellen and Bill were married April 9, 1988.
Ellen served people in need for 25 years as program manager for SARAH, as Director of HUG, and as Vice President of Marketing at KUHN. Her work focused on enabling the independence of people with mental and physical handicaps. She used the grant writing skills she perfected during her tenure to support other nonprofit organizations. Her love of farm life and animals called her to transition to a different kind of service in 2003. Ellen and her working border collies became a familiar sight in central Connecticut as they encouraged Canada Geese to feed in wild areas instead of athletic fields and backyards.
Ellen was an active member of the Northeast Border Collie Association. She was currently the treasurer and served on several committees. She enjoyed competing with her dogs at trials throughout New England, New York and Canada that tested the skills they used routinely to move her sheep to different grazing areas around Dragonfly Farm.
Ellen was generous with her time and knowledge, traveling to fairs and festivals all over Connecticut to demonstrate how a person and dog work together and use the natural behavior of sheep to encourage sheep to move from one place to another.
Ellen was always busy with her hands. Many local residents enjoy the warmth of beautiful wool clothing she knitted from the wool sheered and spun from her own sheep. She was dearly loved for her wonderful sense of humor, her direct and passionate love of life, her energy and strength, and for the generous way she shared her friendship.
Ellen is survived by her husband Bill; her brother and sister-in-law, James and Janet Rusconi; her sister, Linda Morgan; her nephew and wife, James and Lauren Rusconi; and her niece and husband, Dana Rusconi and Robert Fee.
A gathering of family and friends to honor and celebrate Ellen’s life will be held at the North Guilford Congregational Church on Friday, May 1st at 11 AM. If you would like to donate to a charity to honor Ellen, donations can be made to border collie rescue: Glen Highland Farm, 217 Pegg Road - Morris, NY 13808.
