Obituary:
Eric Verner Sandin, a long time resident of Guilford, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 25, his 85th birthday. Mr. Sandin, the son of Eric V. and Virginia Ruth (Kruger) Sandin, was born March 25, 1927 in McMinnville, Oregon. He graduated from Duluth (MN) Central High school in 1943 and then attended Harvard University. In March of 1944 he enlisted in the US Navy and served until the end of World War II in Biloxi, Mississippi. In 1948 he graduated from Harvard. He briefly taught at Kiskiminetas Springs School in PA. In 1953 he obtained a Masters Degree in physics from Wesleyan University and was employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Crop. to work on nuclear power in its early stages, living in both Oak Ridge, TN and Haddam, CT. He entered the Univ. of Conn in 1965 to earn a Ph.D. in nuclear physics after which he taught at Southern Connecticut State University for 20 years. He was a long time member of The Union of Concerned Scientists.
Music was a big part of his life, beginning at age 8 with a church boy’s choir in Champagne, Ill., then in Harvard’s Glee Club and as a flutist in their Marching Band, and various church and community choirs throughout his life including Capella Cantorum. In each community where he lived, the excellence of the church choir was of utmost importance.
Among his many interests, he was a member of the Keyarts Klamberers, a men's walking group, which faithfully hiked the trails of Connecticut every Wednesday. He was an avid gardener and wood worker. He created beautiful wooden bowls from native trees.
Mr. Sandin is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann née Creswell, their three children Katherine Eckerson and husband Charles, of Little Rock, Arkansas; Elizabeth Bush and husband Robert of Glastonbury; and Paul Eric Sandin and wife Victoria of Brookline, NH; and 9 grandchildren, Daniel, Jennifer, Valerie, Sarah and husband Luke, Emily, Benjamin, Anna, Conor, and Alex. He is also survived by a sister, Anna Ruth Sandin Masters of Haddam Neck, CT, and extended family and friends.
The family would especially like to thank Hartford VNA Hospice, for taking such good care of Eric and the family during this time.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 31st at 1:00pm in the First Congregational Church of Guilford, 122 Broad Street, Guilford.
